HEALTH CHECKS
Measurement is a fundamental tool in business, just as it is in science. Without it, there is no way to know what should be replicated and what should be improved. You probably spend quite a bit of time measuring your teams’ productivity, performance, innovation, and retention either directly or indirectly through sales or turnover metrics in order to evaluate your human capital optimization, but how much time have you spent on measuring the human capital needs necessary for optimization?

The human capital needs necessary for optimization aren’t any different. They are definable and distinguishable and how well they are being met is measurable and improvable. When these needs are met: productivity, performance, innovation, and retention increase consequently.

We offer a wide variety of Health Checks designed by psychologists to measure burnout, boreout, how well the needs of your human capital are being met, and other human capital pain points. These tests have been measured for validity and reliability, and have been peer reviewed with follow-up studies. They are offered as part of Durable Approach Research as a free service in our ongoing quest to improve the lives of your team members and the livelihood of your company.

We recommended that these tests be run annually, after major change, and/or when there is general or individual concern or a noticeable drop in performance, productivity, innovation, or retention.

BURNOUT
BURNOUT
Burnout is a progressive spectrum of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion caused by one’s professional life. When left unchecked, it costs companies billions directly in retention costs and indirectly in productivity, performance, and innovation costs. While preventable if caught in time, it must be measured and managed. This test uses a three-scale model of exhaustion, cynicism, and professional inefficacy to detect burnout and pre-burnout stages in your team.
HUMAN CAPITAL NEEDS
Wellness, psychological safety, motivation, and engagement are required components of human capital optimization. While they can be measured directly, they can also be measured indirectly as a whole using the PERMA model. This test measures positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, achievement (or perseverance), and physical health in the context of workplace wellness.

BOREOUT
BOREOUT
Boreout is a progressive spectrum of mental, physical, and emotional apathy caused by prolonged periods of boredom, perceptions of lack of growth, and perceptions of lack of meaning in one’s professional life. While burnout is better known than boreout, it is estimated that boreout can cost companies directly and indirectly as much, if not more, than burnout. This test measures frequency of boredom, lack of perceived growth, and lack of perceived meaning in one’s professional life.
WORK-HOME BOUNDARY MANAGEMENT
Work-home boundary management is one of the leading causes of burnout and is particularly dangerous for remote and hybrid-remote workers. Without traditional physical and temporal barriers, overlapping home and work life can negatively impact both in areas such as work creep and home creep. This test measures the level of spatial, temporal, relational, and communicational work-home boundary management of your team.

VIDEO CONFERENCE FATIGUE
VIDEO CONFERENCE FATIGUE
Video conference fatigue is a relatively new phenomenon caused by frequent or extended video conferencing. While it is related to digital overload, it is a distinct phenomenon and its impact can be even more severe, particularly on remote and hybrid-remote workers who regularly rely on this medium of communication. This test measures your team’s video conferencing frequency, duration, and the level of mental, physical, and emotional impact it has on your team.
EFFECTIVE DIGITAL COMMUNICATION
Digital information flow and digital information climate are key impact points for remote and hybrid-remote work models. Channels, frequency, and tone affect psychological safety, motivation, and engagement. This test measures components of upwards and downwards communication, as well as the communication climate of your team.

LONELINESS AND ISOLATION
LONELINESS AND ISOLATION
Remote and hybrid-remote workers are at a significantly greater risk of loneliness and isolation, both of which directly impact retention, indirectly impact performance, productivity, and innovation, and show a strong positive correlation to burnout. This risk is further increased in regions currently experiencing pandemic-curbing isolation measures and regions that have undergone lengthy pandemic-curbing isolation measures during the past 12 months. This test measures your team’s current social network index.
SLEEP QUALITY
Sleep quality not only directly impacts productivity, performance, and innovation, but consistently poor sleep quality is an early indicator of burnout and pre-burnout stages. Lack of regimentation in remote and hybrid-remote workers increases this risk. This test measures your team’s sleep quality, latency, duration, efficiency, disturbances, and daytime dysfunction.

MENTAL, PHYSICAL, AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS
MENTAL, PHYSICAL, AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS
Mental, physical, and emotional wellness are interconnected. An impact in one, impacts the other two. They are also foundational human capital needs necessary for optimizing your team, meaning that improving wellness will also improve psychological safety, motivation, and engagement. These three tests will measure how well your team is handling stress, their ability to withstand the physical toll work has on the body, and how well they are dealing with negative emotions.
PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY
Psychological safety is the single greatest dynamic of an effective team. Psychological safety, like wellness, is a foundational human capital need necessary for optimizing your team. It directly impacts retention and innovation and indirectly impacts performance and productivity. This test measures individual psychological safety levels of inclusion, learning, contribution, and ability to challenge the status quo.

INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
INTRINSIC MOTIVATION
Motivation doesn’t just directly impact productivity and performance; it is an antecedent to productivity and performance. Motivation can be divided into two categories: extrinsic motivation, the perceived external compensation for completing tasks such as money or recognition and intrinsic motivation, the personal enjoyment of completing tasks such as interest, autonomy, perceived competence, or relation to values. While increasing external compensation yields diminishing returns, increasing intrinsic motivation yields increasing returns. This test measures your team’s intrinsic motivation levels using 6 key intrinsic motivation components.
ENGAGEMENT
Engagement refers to your team’s levels of vigor, dedication, and absorption into their work. Engagement directly impacts all four components of optimization: productivity, performance, innovation, and retention. It can be thought of as being fully aligned with and emotionally invested in the company’s goals. While increasing wellness, psychological safety, and motivation will indirectly increase engagement, engagement itself can be measured and further increased directly. This test measures your team’s engagement levels using a three-scale model.

ENGAGEMENT
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
Gratitude is the acknowledgement of another person’s actions that brought about a positive benefit. While gratitude is not a human capital need, it directly impacts wellness, psychological safety, motivation, and engagement, thus indirectly impacting productivity, performance, innovation, and retention. This test measures your team’s gratitude using a Likert scale.
MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is the non-judgemental awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment. While mindfulness, like gratitude, is not a human capital need, it directly impacts wellness, psychological safety, motivation, and engagement, thus indirectly impacting productivity, performance, innovation, and retention. This test measures your team’s frequency of receptive awareness and conscious attention to the present.
